DAY 02: IN MAMALLAPURAM

After breakfast proceed for sightseeing. Mamallapuram is a World Heritage site according to UNESCO and is a treasure trove of many sculptural marvels. Centuries ago, it was a bustling port city of Pallavas and was a renowned center for stone carving. The Pallavas, a dynasty which ruled for 600 years till the end of 9th century laid the foundation of Dravidian architecture with unique culptural Panels, caves, monolithic

rathas and temples. The wall panels depict scenes from Hindu mythology and fables from the Panchatantra. On this tour we will visit "Arjuna`s Penance" – a whale-back shaped rock which is one of the largest Bas Relief monoliths in the world. It is about 96 ft long and 43 ft high and contains figures of Gods, demigods, men, beasts, birds and infant representing the entire creation. It is also home to the renowned "Five Rathas", also known as Pancha Pandava Rathas consisting of five monolithic temples where each temple is constructed in a different style. At the end of a trip we will visit "The Shore Temple", the oldest temple in South India which was built in the 8 century AD, constructed in Dravidian style. This temple is a combination of three shrines, with two dedicated to Lord Shiva and one to Lord Vishnu. To get a flavour of the South Indian cuisine, we have included a banana leaf lunch at one of the oldest restaurants of Mamallapuram. Return to hotel and at rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight stay in Mamallapuram.
